Babita Kharel credits her two mothers Khina Maya Kharel and Beda Giri for shaping her into the confident and strong woman that she is now despite her trying journey.
Babita was pursuing her undergrad education in Environmental Management from Royal Thimphu College when she was diagnosed with the medical condition of Atopic dermatitis, a hair infection that forced her to shave her head twice.
“Having to shave my hair two times during college made me lose all my self-esteem to the point that I couldn’t even go out and socialise with my friends. However, it was my mother Khina Maya Kharel who nursed me back to health. Amidst this, my family was also going through a difficult time as my parents were splitting after 30 years of marriage. However, my mother sacrificed her time and her well-being for me.
Along with my biological mother, I had my second mother Aum Beda, the Founder of the NGO Ability Bhutan Society who introduced me to the world of volunteering and charity work. Working with the patients of Ability Bhutan Society allowed me to come out of my shell, regain my long lost confidence and interest in interacting with people.”
After completing her degree, Babita had bigger dreams of making her mothers proud. However, the pandemic brought along hurdles for her and she had to change the course of her direction.
“During the pandemic, I didn’t want to stay idle and I needed to be able to support my mother so I started an online business. I researched for days in order to understand how e-commerce works, how I could cater to more customers, how to promote my business through social media channels and etc. Accordingly, I acquired a great number of skills and found a new passion for research and social media marketing.”
Babita persisted and tried her level best to make a living for herself and her mother through her online business but the frequent lockdowns and societal pressure made it challenging for her to continue on her own. Her mothers wanted her to stand strong, make a name for herself and show the world that women can do anything and Babita says she needed a supportive community like AB Ventures to do that.
“After joining AB Ventures, my growing self-confidence found a new height. I love my team and am very grateful for the positive environment that it provides me with.”
